Modern Australian Food

Australian food used to have a terrible reputation as being like British food but noticeably worse! This is certainly not the case today. In fact, the standard of food is extremely high and there are culinary delights to be tasted throughout the country, particularly in Melbourne and Sydney. As Australia is a multi-cultural nation, the food reflects the wide range of influences and tastes that are present, ensuring there is something to tantalise everyone’s taste buds.

Australians (like most people) place a great emphasis on food throughout their lives. As a nation they have few native foods; however, it is not uncommon to find the likes of kangaroo on the menu. Meat is extremely popular, largely due to its low cost and availability as Australia is one of the world’s largest meat producers. The quality and diversity of sea foods will have you in awe as will the size of the shellfish! The majority of Australia’s food is locally produced and you really do notice this in the taste.

As with most other countries, food is a way of life and is an experience to be shared with friends and family. The rumours about Aussies loving a good barbeque are true, and who can blame them for wanting to be outdoors as much as possible when the weather is so reliable and the scenery is as stunning as it is across the country. Most parks and beaches have barbequeing facilities which are put to good use, especially in the summer months. Many restaurants offer al fresco dining and it’s amazing how good a cold beer and bowl of chips can taste whilst looking across the beach, or harbour, at a wonderful sunset.
