www.immi.gov.au/settle/education/vic.htm School is compulsory in Victoria from the ages of 6 to 15. School goes from Prep to Year 12. Primary school lasts seven years and secondary school for six.
Primary
Children can attend school if they turn 5 by 30 April in the year they want to enrol. Primary school goes from Prep to Year 6.
Secondary
Secondary students study towards gaining their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Students must obtain their VCE if they want to gain entry to university. The VCE is very competitive and entry marks for Victorian universities have been consistently high over recent years. Secondary education places emphasis on core areas of study whilst also encouraging students to concentrate on areas which are of particular interest.
Universities
Each year more than 150,000 students (50,000 international students live in Melbourne alone) choose to study in Australia. Internationally Melbourne has an enviable reputation as a centre of learning and is now considered one of the education capitals of Asia Pacific.
Victoria offers first degree education through to post-graduate levels of study through nine universities situated in and around the city. Students will need to have gained the VCE or equivalent to gain entry.
